What is Menopause?

Menopause is a milestone in a woman’s life which marks the last menstrual period and the transition from the reproductive to the non-reproductive period of life. For some women it is a smooth transition. For other women it causes physiological and psychological discomfort and, sometimes, distress.

A very important question menopause poses to physicians is whether it represents a normal stage in women’s life cycles or whether it is a hormone deficiency syndrome related to the failure of the ovary, which requires diagnosis and treatment.

However, many doctors believe that menopause is a normal and significant point in woman’s life cycle that may be associated with symptoms of discomfort and, sometimes, the risk of more serious illness.
